Ecology of Small Mammals, Vegetation, and Avian Nest Survival on Private Rangelands in Nebraska

چکیده
Small mammals can be an important bioindicator of ecosystem health. They serve as both predator and prey in many ecosystems. By means of live trapping and nest monitoring, we studied the ecological relationships between small mammals, avian nest survival, and vegetation composition and structure on six private ranches in the Sandhills of Nebraska during 2004. Our study documented six species (132 captures) of small mammals, and we monitored 139 bird nests. Pastures with high small-mammal populations did not suffer higher nest mortality, indicating that small-mammal abundance does not predict avian productivity. We found several vegetation characteristics that influenced small-mammal abundance on our sites. Small-mammal capture indices declined with increased percentage of lying-litter cover in pastures. Long-duration grazing systems had higher small-mammal indices than mediumor short-duration grazing systems, and proximal pastures had higher similarity indices for both birds and small mammals. Our study shows that landowners can affect the small-mammal community through grazing management.

Documenting relationships between small mammals, ground-nesting passerine birds, and grazing systems on private rangelands in the Nebraska sandhills
Introduction Biologists lack a great deal of information about wildlife in the Nebraska Sandhills, especially on private rangelands. For example, there is little knowledge about the small mammals of the area and their role in the ecosystem in which they live. Because only three percent of Nebraska is public land (Schneider et. al 2005), private land management is, by default, critical to the bi...
متن کاملNest and Brood Site Selection and Survival of Greater Prairie-Chickens in the Eastern Sandhills of Nebraska
Greater Prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnata) are a grassland species of conservation concern. Although greater prairie-chickens have experienced decline over much of their range, the Nebraska Sandhills has the largest and most stable population in North America. However, the responses of nest site selection and survival to vegetation characteristics in the Sandhills is unknown. We stud...
متن کاملTiming of nest vegetation measurement may obscure adaptive significance of nest‐site characteristics: A simulation study
Advances in understanding avian nesting ecology are hindered by a prevalent lack of agreement between nest-site characteristics and fitness metrics such as nest success. We posit this is a result of inconsistent and improper timing of nest-site vegetation measurements. Therefore, we evaluated how the timing of nest vegetation measurement influences the estimated effects of vegetation structure ...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Effect of Constructing Small Arc Basins System on Vegetation Composition and Biodiversity in Aridland Ecosystems in the East of Iran (Case study: Rangelands of Sarbisheh, South Khorasan Province)
Introduction: One of the ways of restoration and reclamation of damaged rangeland is to use different methods of rain harvesting such as pitting, counter furrowing, flood spreading, small arc basins system and etc., along with the reduction of runoff, it increases the soil moisture content and thus increases vegetation cover. Biodiversity is most commonly used to describe the number of species....
متن کاملHabitat Relations Greater Prairie-Chicken Nest Success and Habitat Selection in Southeastern Nebraska
Greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnatus) are reported to benefit from grasslands created through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Prairie-chicken population size increased noticeably in southeastern Nebraska after >15% of county-level landscapes were converted to CRP grasslands. But, the mechanisms behind the increase in population size are not well understood, and managers...
